Sunderland Mourns After River Wear Car Tragedy Claims Three Young Lives

Communities across the North East are reeling following a devastating incident in Sunderland. Police have officially named the three teenagers who lost their lives when a car plunged into the River Wear near the Wearmouth Bridge.

The victims are 17-year-old Jackson Duke alongside 16-year-olds Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw. Jackson and Luke were from the local Sunderland area, while Zara hailed nearby from Houghton-le-Spring. Northumbria Police confirmed their identities on Wednesday as specialist family liaison officers continue supporting the grieving relatives through unimaginable agony.

The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon shortly after 1:30 PM. An emergency response swept into the area as reports surfaced that a vehicle had entered the water. Firefighters, coastguard units, paramedics, and the air ambulance rushed to the scene alongside police officers.

Four individuals were inside the vehicle when it went into the river. Miraculously, a 17-year-old boy managed to escape and reach safety, sustaining non-serious injuries. Following the incident, that surviving teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody. Investigators emphasize that inquiries into exactly who was driving at the precise moment the car entered the water are ongoing, though authorities currently believe no other vehicles were involved.

By Wednesday afternoon, recovery operations drew solemn crowds to the riverside downstream from the Wearmouth Bridge. Police divers entered the chilly water, securing a harness to the black hatchback before a crane lifted it upward. The vehicle emerged upside down, bearing severe damage to its front bumper and windscreen. Local residents and mourners gathered near the banks, casting bunches of fresh flowers into the River Wear in tribute.

Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie, Area Commander for Sunderland, voiced the profound grief felt across the region. He noted that all three teenagers had their whole futures ahead of them and urged members of the public to avoid speculating on social media out of respect for the families enduring this sudden loss.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses, CCTV footage, or dashcam recordings that might shed light on the moments leading up to the vehicle entering the water. Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police quoting reference NP-20260929-0589.
